Democratic Congressional Candidate Curtis Hertel, Jr., who never served in the military, thought it would be a good idea to wear an official U.S. Army-issued uniform jacket to a Veterans Day event, posing for photos with uniformed military and veterans. This is what is called “Stolen Valor,” claiming or implying service when you didn’t serve.
Never Served
Hertel is no longer in office, had no official capacity to speak, and wasn’t on the program. He elbowed his way onto the dais in a U.S. Army-issued jacket and never mentioned that he was not a veteran.
Outraged Michigan Veterans wrote An Open Letter to former State Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr. demanding an apology from Hertel for misrepresenting himself as a veteran at a Veterans Day Memorial.
